Boys and Girls Conjoined No Longer
By: Alic Burkett Culver Community Middle/High School now has its own girls’ wrestling team. Not only are high school girls able to compete, but middle school as well. Although it may be a struggle for the younger girls to remain consistent with the older girls, the learning experience will grow their skills. “I love the fact that we have middle school ladies on the team. They are learning all the skills right along with the high school girls,” said assistant coach Triston Rodriguez. “If they continue, they will be unstoppable by the time they are seniors!” In addition to the girls having a new wrestling team, they also have a…

Strength in Numbers
By: Lisa Krmek The days are getting shorter and the air is getting colder, which means that winter is coming and basketball season is just around the corner. This year there are more Culver Community girls who are enthusiastic about basketball than there has been for a long time. “I believe that the 8th grade team success from last year along with the soccer and volleyball teams this fall has carried over to the basketball season,” said athletic director Mike Zehner. There is not just an increase in girls but coaches as well. 6 coaches and managers are working with players this year. All try to be present at as…

Holiday Traditions : Out With the Ordinary, In With the Extraordinary
By: Karlee Slone Hot chocolate around the fire, Christmas music on the radio, and cranberry sauce makes everyone think of the same thing: holidays. Many families have similar ways of celebrating, with stockings hung and a ham on the table. However, many would be surprised to see how much variation there is in a small town like Culver. “We have Yule where essentially we celebrate the old Gods and the coming of Skadi the Winter Goddess,” said sophomore Grai Helmke. “My dad has this gigantic goat horn that he fills to the top with ale. He has to drink it all in one go without putting it down.” Traditions are…

SRO’s in the Building
By: Troy Fa’Atuai-McCuen According to Madison Gerdes article, “Policing in Schools” Student Resource Officers (SRO’s) are in around 42% of public schools and 10.9% are sworn in law officers. The SRO’s that are in schools across the country are there to help protect students from harm and to maintain order, safety, and security. But not anyone can just become an SRO. “SRO’s are carefully selected individuals,” said Culver Community Resource Officer Ryleigh Carr. An SRO goes through 4 years of special training. They have to be cooperative with children, de-escalate any situation, and think of what the best decision is to make during an emergency. These key factors aren’t the…

On the Court
By: Gabi Emery For the first time in Culver volleyball history the volleyball team had won both the sectional and regional championships. Though they faced challenges, they pushed past those obstacles and claimed the court. The volleyball girls faced Triton High School in their sectional championship. They started strong and steady, ready to win. It was the first time Coach Andrea Berndt had won against Triton and the whole team was exhilarated and jumping up and down on the court after their win. However, what excited them most was the thought of going to regionals and possibly winning that championship as well. “I really believe our sectional championship match against…

New Phone Law Enforcement
By: Hazel Tomblin The state of Indiana created a new state law that forbids students from using wireless communication devices during instructional time. Instructional time is a time in which students are participating in an approved course, a curriculum, or an educationally related activity under the direction of a teacher. The state of Indiana created this law because there were major problems state-wide in schools of phone usage during class. Some teachers and students are thankful for this law. “Yes, without being on our devil devices during class we are starting to become more like real humans. It has been fantastic,” said history teacher Kyle Klinge. “I really appreciate how…

Homecoming Court 2024
By: Bre Hamilton Homecoming court at Culver Community is something for each grade. Each year, 2 boys and 2 girls from grades 9 through 11 and 3 boys and 3 girls from the senior class get voted anonymously by their classmates to represent their grade. However, only the senior class gets an opportunity to be crowned homecoming queen or king. Mrs. Haidee Temme has been in charge of homecoming court for the last 11 years and enjoys being in charge of homecoming court. “What I enjoy most about Homecoming court is seeing the kids all dressed up and enjoying it. I love when classes choose different students each year,” said…

Culver Cheer: A Growing Sport
By: Kali Loehmer Cheerleading has been around since the late 1800’s and it has grown into a competitive sport with different team styles. The most common teams are sideline and competitive. Attendees at any Culver Community Middle/High School event before 2022 may have noticed that there wasn’t a cheer team larger than 10. But at the start of the 2023-24 school year, communications director Hanna Croy decided to step up to coach the cheer team with not very much background in cheer, but with the commitment to bring life back to the Culver Community cheer squad. “My motivation to make the cheer team successful is simple. My name is attached…

Love Island
By: Camila Ledezma Finding love is the whole purpose of the TV show Love Island USA. Season 6, which is the latest, had the most viewers due to the exhilarating events, shocking drama, and huge impact on social media. Edits of the Love Island couples have gone viral all over Tiktok and Instagram, and most content creators on social media have admitted that they only watched season 6 because of the edits. “I think I was mostly influenced by the edits of Rob and Leah all over my Tiktok. All the drama, and how Leah and Rob’s situation started,” said sophomore Aiden Molebash. “So Leah and Miguel’s relationship is the…
