Beginning of a Great Season

With the intense August heat, the Culver football players battled dehydration as they pushed to achieve their goals for the end of the season. As the weather cooled, the focus of the head coach and captains of the 33 player squad have become in focus.
Head coach Mike Zehner is a seasoned coach who played football for 10 years and coached for 17 years. His goal for the season is to win games. He also wants the team to learn from their losses and get experience from the season. The captains have similar plans.
“The first game went well, could be better, but we are still learning. The second game went well and it told us where we are at, so we can focus on sectionals,” senior captain Marquez Anderson said.
Anderson is the starting tight end and defensive end of the Culver football team. He has played football for three years of high school. His individual goal for the season is to be an all conference tight end, but his team goal for the season is to win sectionals which other captains also agree with.
“The season is going good as long as we can put it all together by the time sectionals come around,” says starting quarterback Tucker Fisher.
Fisher is also the outside linebacker of the team. He has played football all four years of high school. His individual goal for the season is to lead the team in tackles. Tucker’s team goal is to also win sectionals.
With the focus of learning and winning, the Culver football team started the season 2-3 and are now on to week 9 against the Caston Comets. The team has had many learning opportunities throughout the season, Zehner and the captains believe the team is prepared for the Pioneer and other games to come.
“The games this season have helped us learn from our mistakes and show us what we need to do, in order to get better for sectionals,” said senior Auston Zehner.
