Shuman Breaks Cavalier Rushing Record

   Senior running back Shane Shuman is the latest Cavalier to add his name into the school record book. On September 9, 2022 against West Central, Shuman surpassed the 3,000 career rushing yard mark which put him ahead of the previous record holder Zach Ditmire.

   Shuman has been a three-year starter as a running back during his high school career which helped reach his goal. As a player, Shuman is a relentless, strong, and powerful ball carrier. According to coach Mike Zehner, Shuman will fight for every last yard anytime he gets the ball and has nothing but praise for him.

   “We definitely saw a lot in Shane even as a freshman. He played a lot and ended up starting at linebacker as a freshman. The thing that impresses me about Shane is that he was/is not the fastest kid or even the strongest kid. He is a kid that plays hard and gives his all every play.  He doesn’t take plays off and is like the Energizer Bunny. I really don’t think much about records, but we haven’t had a back be the primary running back for 3 years straight. He has already broken 1,000 yards for this season as well.” 

    And what most onlookers don’t realize is that Shuman also has an ability to see openings in plays better than most high school players. These traits he’s developed over his high school career are what has led him to becoming the Cavalier’s new all-time leading rusher.

       “Shane has great vision on the field running the ball.  When changing offenses this year, that was one thing Coach Foust was curious about, was what Shane’s vision would be with a shotgun approach.  He put that to bed early with some great runs early in scrimmages at Manchester University’s football camp.”

   Despite being known as the go-to man for Culver, Shuman has battled through opponents’ defenses for the past three years, and one opponent in particular, stood out as his toughest challenge. 

   “My hardest opponent to play on offense would be Triton this year. They kept me to the lowest amount of yards in my career running the ball.”

  And although Shuman isn’t the type of person regularly showcasing his emotions, this record cracked that facade.

  “When I broke the record, I felt a great source of joy for all the hard work I’ve put in the last four years.” 

  Shane’s tremendous work ethic mixed in with his natural ability has created a Culver Community High School football legend. Time and time again he displayed this hard work and football IQ no matter what stood in his way. Shane has comfortably broken the rushing record and still has games to play. It is safe to say that this record could be standing for decades to come.
