Spicing It Up in the Kitchen
By: Chloee Dante and Kaity Stacy
With the long winter months creeping up on us all, seniors Kaity and Chloee were on the hunt for a recipe to spice up their drab lives. Guacamole and salsa are the perfect after school snack, appetizer, or meal to bring some sunshine into these cold and cloudy days.
Eagerly, Kaity and Chloee got in the kitchen to whip up a fiesta. Shockingly, making the salsa and guacamole took no longer than twenty minutes. For the salsa, the girls added 28 ounces of peeled rotelle tomatoes, two garlic cloves, ⅓ cup of cilantro, half of a medium onion chopped up, one jalapeño, the juice of one lime, ½ teaspoon white granulated sugar, roughly two teaspoons of salt, 1 teaspoon of cumin, and about one teaspoon of chili powder.
They tried to stick to the original recipe, but quickly discovered that the ingredients should be added based on personal preference. After trying it for themselves, both Kaity and Chloee agreed they should’ve added less cilantro. Kaity personally would have added more salt.
For the guacamole, the girls diced half an onion, diced one tomato, minced 2 garlic cloves, and smashed up two avocados. They then mixed all the ingredients together and added the juice of half a lime. The original recipe called for a jalapeño and cilantro, but the girls opted out of using those ingredients.
Per usual, Kaity and Chloee had to get the opinion of their peers. First up to test the chefs’ salsa and guacamole recipe was senior Olivia Compton. She rated the Salsa a 7 out of 10 and then gave the guacamole an 8 out of ten.
Olivia agreed that the salsa had too much cilantro but also said, “The guacamole is pretty good but could use a little more.”
Next to the plate was junior Landon Stevens. Landon also rated the salsa a 7 out of 10. Landon did disclose that he does not like guacamole, but nonetheless he gave it a try. He ended up giving it a 5 out of 10.
The last taste tester was sophomore Amiyah Williams. She was the highest ranking for the salsa, giving it an 8 out of 10.
“The salsa is actually pretty good,” Amiyah said shockingly.
She gave the guacamole a ranking of 7.5 out of 10 saying that it was a little too plain for her liking.
After all the taste testing was complete, Kaity and Chloee were satisfied with the salsa, but thought that next time they should add the jalapeño and cilantro to the guacamole. The recipes are posted below, and the chefs would love your feedback! Make them for yourself and decide how you like your salsa and guacamole.
