What is Hoosier Girls and Boys’ State?

By: Ashton Macedonio

Hoosier Boys and Girls State is a week-long leadership and citizenship program for high school junior boys and girls that is sponsored by the American Legion Department of Indiana. It is a unique opportunity for young men and women to learn about government and civic responsibility, as well as to develop their leadership skills and make connections with other like-minded individuals from across the state.

The program is held annually in June and is open to boys and girls who have completed their junior year of high school. Participants are chosen based on their academic achievement, leadership potential, and community involvement. The program is designed to simulate a state government, with participants being divided into two political parties and forming a mock government.

During the program, participants engage in a variety of activities that are designed to teach them about the responsibilities of citizenship and the workings of government. They participate in mock elections, write and debate bills, and attend seminars on leadership, public speaking, and other topics relevant to civic engagement.

Throughout the program, participants have the opportunity to interact with a diverse group of young men and women from across the state. They work together in small groups, participate in team-building activities, and engage in social events designed to encourage networking and relationship-building.

Hoosier Boys and Girls State also features guest speakers who share their experiences in government and leadership, providing valuable insights and advice for the participants. The program culminates with a mock inauguration ceremony, during which the newly-elected officials are sworn in and take their positions in the mock government.

The goals of Hoosier Boys and Girls State are to inspire and educate young men and women about the importance of civic engagement, to help them develop their leadership skills, and to encourage responsible citizenship. Many past participants have gone on to successful careers in government, business, and other fields; and credit Hoosier Boys and Girls State with helping them to develop the skills and confidence necessary for success.

The students selected for Hoosier Boys and Girls State from Culver Community for the 2023 event are Gwen Gilley, Abigail Caudill, Willow Harrington, Aleksander Stacy, Landon Stevens, and Nathan Wilhoit.

“I’m excited to see how Hoosier Boys State is. I’m excited to see how they deal with the political parties and things of that nature,” said junior Aleks Stacy.
