Culver Volleyball Beats Judson for the First Time
By: Willow Harrington
The Cavalier volleyball team faced North Judson in a conference match at home on Thursday,
September 15. Never before in HNAC conference history has Culver pulled out a win against
Judson.
The Cavs started out the game very strong, pulling out the first set in their favor with a score of
25-17. Winning just one set brought so much excitement to the team and the crowd.
“The game made me feel very excited,” said junior Avery Garland “It was a very fun and
intense game to be in.”
The Cavs continued to fight going through the second set with Judson coming back to fight
and play harder than the set before. This didn’t phase the girls though. They fought back just as
hard, gaining another set win with a score of 25-20. The girls and coaches were overly thrilled
and full of excitement.
When the third set came around, the girls had a struggle. Judson came back with a
vengeance, determined to win. Culver didn’t win this set, ending with a score of 14-25.
This didn’t shut the girls down though. They had an intense talk before the start of the fourth
set with head coach Andrea Berndt. They didn’t want all their hard work from the first two sets to
be for nothing. The girls went out to the court with a new fire. It was an intense battle, but the
Cavs pulled through with a groundbreaking score of 25-13.
The girls ended the night with much excitement, and overly thrilled. Beating Judson in a set
had not happened for this team, let alone beating them in a game. This season’s team has
raised the bar, and now other teams don’t see them as a walk-in-the-park competitor.
“I now have higher expectations for myself and my teammates,” said Brynn Berndt “We need
to constantly be getting better and not going down hill since we have worked so hard to get
where we are.”
Head coach Andrea Berndt is very proud of all girls’ success this season, along with the great
success of this game. After beating Judson, the girls went on to continue a great season. The
JV team has won two tournaments and varsity is on their way to sectionals.
“The team has come a long way. They have proved that they can compete and that they will,”
coach Berndt said. “ That alone raises my expectations, along with how other teams now view
us as competitors.”
