Upcoming Academic HNAC Competitions

The Hoosier North Athletic Conference consists of eight schools in northwestern Indiana. These schools are Culver Community, Caston, Knox, LaVille, North Judson, Pioneer, Triton, and Winamac.
Each year these schools compete in both writing and mathematical competitions. For the writing competition, students are given a wide range of creative freedom. From narrative writing to making a children’s book, the writing competition offers something for every student interested in competing.
“I revised my narrative several times, having not only my English teacher, Mrs. Fobert, look over it but a couple of my classmates. I’ve talked to many of my peers about the category they were writing for, even being able to read some of them. They all had great features about them,” said senior Ian Brown.
The math competition consists of five students from every level of math starting at Algebra 1 and going up to calculus.
“Calculus is a hard class, that’s why you don’t see many people taking it, the problems our teacher, Mr. Buschman, assigns us are all familiar looking but with the added pressure of the HNAC competition have been intensified. Even though I struggle getting through the assignments some days, I feel confident in my abilities and my classmates’ abilities to gain good standings in the HNAC tournament,” said senior Ian Brown.
For the HNAC math competition, students are working hard to review all the work they can to have the best chances to do well.
“The group and I have been preparing together quite often, multiple times a week actually. Mr.Buschman has also been doing a great job with preparing us for the completion. As for the competition, I hope for our school to win,” said senior Joey Pizur.
Last year, Culver’s Algebra II team placed first in their division and the math team placed the highest in school history. The team placed fourth and was just merely points away from a third place finish. This year hopes are set high for a new school record finish.
