Sliding into a Successful Season

By: Willow Harrington

The past few years the Culver Cavalier softball team has struggled to recruit enough players to have both a JV and varsity team; but this year, it all changes. Whether it be the new coaches this season with familiar faces, or a spike in interest, the softball team has enough girls for both a JV and varsity.

With a bigger team this year, that brings on lots of connections. Many of the girls have played together since they were little, so they have built up a strong bond between each other.

“I think that this year’s team is more of a family rather than a bunch of players,” said freshman Gracie Milam.

Along with this, a bigger team also brings on more talent and different responsibilities for the girls. Each girl, rather she be on JV or varsity, helps lead and take control on the field.

“My responsibility on the team is to be a leader for the younger girls like the middle schoolers. I always cheer on my teammates no matter what and bring the energy in the dugout,” said sophomore Zoey Hunnicutt. “There are times where everyone messes up, that’s going to happen. It’s just a matter of bringing your teammates out of that hole.”

This season the team feels very strong and have the motto, “No Excuses.” With this, they have some big goals they wish to accomplish by the end of the year.

“A team goal that we all have is definitely winning sectionals,” said senior Abbigail Kisela.

Winning sectionals is a big goal across the board with the players, and they have started their season off on the right foot to accomplish this. They had their first home game against Argos pulling out the win with a score of 8-6 and starting their winning streak.

Being senior heavy this year and having no juniors on the team, they will have a young team coming up next year, and the seniors hope they can leave the team with some new found leadership and loads of fun.

“As a senior, what I want to leave for the team when I’m gone is a new role of leadership for Zoey Hunnicut to take over centerfield and to carry on our little spider-man tradition with the underclassmen she plays with,” said Abbigail Kisela. “It’ll be a fun memory for her to share with others and other outfielders currently to carry it on as well.”
