Meet the Caval Crier’s Freelance Artists

By: Shawn Green

As the Student Media program is growing, we would like to introduce to you our new newspaper artists. Junior Jocqueline Nystrom and sophomore Alyx Sparhawk are the official artists. Both come with a lot of artistic talent.

Nystrom has enjoyed drawing and other expressions of art for most of her life, but she was excited to focus on comics.

“Comics had been a small passion of mine since I was little and never expected to be able to actually show them. So when given the opportunity, I knew I had to take it,” said Nystrom.

As Jocquelin’s talent continues to spread, she keeps the person that inspired her to begin with in her mind. She continues to thrive and pushes to do better with her art to impress her father, who does the same type of art.

“My dad is my main inspiration when it comes to art because he’s a tattoo artist. Growing up, I’d go to other people’s houses with him and sit there watching him tattoo,” said Nystrom.

Along with Jocquelin, Alyx Sparhawk’s art skills are going to be a great asset to the newspaper program. Their mind is their main inspiration when it comes to making art. They see something interesting and make their own version of it.

“Sometimes I get inspiration from strong emotions, other times simply a uniquely shaped object inspires me to draw something inspired by it,” said Sparhawk.

Personally as an artist, Alyx is trying new things and experimenting with different events. They plan to carry their talent into the future and make it a career.

“My dad has always been really into graffiti style art. Growing up in Ohio, he and his brothers would spray paint together. I strive to be a professional artist and make my dad proud,” said Sparhawk.

Both of these artists have fantastic skill and have agreed to participate in Culver Community’s publication program. The staff is thrilled to see what they do with this new-found position. They are currently working a comic section for the end of school and our graduation which will be our SENIORS edition in May.
